Modstox  made there first  2008 trip to Brampton…beautiful sunny weather and a well prepared track but unfortunately a disappointing 6 car turnout although it was good to see Reg Picken (191) make his modstox  race debut  18 years after his last outing trackside which was at long Eaton in a hotstox.

Heat1 – only 4 cars actually raced with Steve Denbigh (12) sidelined with electrical problems and reg picken pushed off track with gearbox probs.early leader was Pontefract’s Steve watkiss (13) before Gary picken (93) took the lead never to be headed. Late casualty was Nathan picken (95) who retired with yet another sick engine which saw him sidelined for the rest of the day.

Heat 2 - no show from swinton car project’s dale mcandrew(303) making springing mods to rear end..Even team Principal Dave wood  getting his hands dirty!. Again impressive early leader was Steve watkiss(13) with Steve Denbigh(12) in second til halfway until sidelined with engine troubles which were to see him sidelined for the rest of the day. Gary came through at 3 quarter distance to again win.

Final – Champion of Champions race -the track was watered before the final which yet again made the track amazingly slippery for the modstox cars. Early casualty was Steve(13)who spun before even crossing the starting line. Early leader was dale (303) before Gary moved through again showing his liking for the Brampton conditions  wet or dry. Gary held a good lead before he succumbed to the treacherous 2nd bend conditions and spun himself out and got collected by lap down Steve. For a few seconds it looked like Gary had thrown away his chance of the title as he was unable to find reverse but fortunately Steve got going again which also allowed Gary to restart. Late on Steve passed Reggie(191) for the final podium position whilst dale mcandrew(303) scored consistently all day including 2nd in the final.

Grand National – the track now dry again and proved to be the best race of the day. Steve watkiss (13) really looked determined to win this one and made a good break throughout the first half of the race. However during the second half of the race Gary(93) clawed back distance relentlessly and was hot on Steve’s heels going into the last lap. Gary tagged Steve hard coming out of the second bend which put Steve in a tank slapper which saw him hit the outside tyres full bore and out of the race. Unfortunately the heavy impact saw the ambulance called  with Steve a bit shaken  a bruised ankle  a bit lip and a steering wheel in the shape of a banana as a memento the impact

Overall a poor meeting for the modstox with the lack of cars creating a poor show for spectators although the drivers who did attend enjoyed themselves and did their best to entertain. Particularly the last race!. Driver of the day had to be reg picken(191) getting on track 2 years to the day exactly after heart surgery ..On the pace and bagging a hatful of points and a load of British Heart foundation sponsorship money from Gary  to boot!!
