Modstox made there first ever trip to Birmingham wheels raceway on a gloriously hot day in front of the decent crowd with ministox, lightning rods, incarods and banger meet .unfortunately the rain came down just at the start of the final which made it tricky for some..No names 93!
There were quite a few first time entries Chris Watkiss (139) a former autograss racer and son of regular Steve (13) .from Pontefract .Simon Bailey (276) from stoke made his first outing since the 2006 season albeit sporting a forsale sign. Mack boys sponsor “Greenspeed” powder coating Paul green (48) hotrod racer raced the team green racer normally in the hands of Andrew Edwards .Ben Roche (98) borrowing brother jakes car whilst Jake was sunning himself in Spain whilst test pilot of the former Geoff mewett (552) car recently purchased by the swinton car project was former f2 racer Ian Broomhead (388) who went extremely well and returned the car undamaged to boot!
Heat1 – early leader was Simon bailey(276) but going into 2nd lap he was passed by Nathan picken(95) and dale mcandrew(303) who tangled and spun with nath collected by reg picken(191).this melee allowed blue tops Neil cooper(256) up to lead with Gary picken (93) in 2nd and Neil Mack(56) 3rd.reg and dale pulled off at quarter distance Neil Mack then moved through to lead but Neil kept in close contention. At mid-distance Paul green (48) gave Chris watkiss (139) a helping spin on turn two. By three quarter distance arron (356) had moved past Gary into 3rd and was closing down on coop..Going into the last lap coop tangled with lap down Ben Roche (98) coming out of the 2nd bend which allowed 256 and 93 to nip through. Finally as the chequered flag fell an off the pace Simon bailey blew up in spectacular fashion.
Heat 2 - unfortunately no 95, 98 or 276 for the rest of the day all with terminal engine problems. early leader was Chris (139) before spinning out on lap2.neil coop then opened up a gap in the lead with 56 93 and 388 having a close dice for 2nd before 56 set sail after 256 when Gary went the wrong way past 139.arron came on strong towards the end passing both Gary and Ian for 3rd as Gary’s right rear started to shred. On the last bend 56 made a dive for 256 but failed to connect with coop taking a worthy victory.
Final – reg picken pulled off again prior to the start of this one with elec probs..Rain started just as the cars were about to start rolling lap which made life tricky for some more than others!! Lap 1 and 303 and 93 tangled on pits bend whilst 256 lead.139 also spun in sympathy! By lap 2 it was 256, 356, 56 train before Neil edged into the lead. As the race wore on 256 slipped back struggling for traction coming out of the bends.behind him a good battle between newbie’s Paul (48) and Ian(388) which Ian won when Paul collected/t- boned 139 right in front of starter.56 although leading had to avoid spinning 93 and 139 on two consecutive laps going into bend 3.with a lap or 2 to go 388 closed in on 256 and was about to make a lunge for 3rd going into last bend when a frustrated Gary decided he would spoil the party which allowed Neil to hang on to his podium finish. The winner though Neil Mack (56) proving rain or shine he’s the man to beat.
Overall an enjoyable and well organised meeting with some hard but clean stock car racing and the track seemed to suit the cars well with long sweeping bends meaning all cars on 4 cylinders were running fairly evenly. Driver of the day...Well for me a tossup between Neil coop, arron or Ian broomhead.
